Vantage is a global, multi-asset broker with a team of in-house writers and market analysts who produce educational and insightful trading content for traders of all levels.

XAUUSD is having an oddly quiet morning for a market that just pulled off one of its fastest moves of the year. Gold price today sits at $4,256.27, up 0.38%, as of 07 August 2026, 07:00 (GMT+8), after touching an intraday high of $4,259.37, per the Vantage XAUUSD CFD 4-hour chart used for this analysis. Barely a week ago, gold prices were stuck below $4,100. Now the calm is about to be tested: the US July jobs report lands later today, and it is usually gold’s noisiest hour of the month.

This XAUUSD technical analysis reads the gold price chart and the calendar as they stand right now. It is not a call on where XAUUSD goes next, and it should not be read as one.

What the XAUUSD Chart is Actually Showing

The gold price news of the past month is really a story in two acts. Act one: several weeks of gold grinding sideways to lower through mid-July, dipping toward the $3,975 to $4,000 area, in a range other desks were already calling a multi-week floor at the yearly low.1 Act two: early August, when the pair broke hard, tearing from around $4,050 toward $4,300 in a matter of sessions before settling into the $4,230 to $4,260 band it now occupies. Not exactly a slow news month for XAUUSD.

Both moving averages on the XAUUSD chart used for this analysis, the 50-period at $4,076.52 and the 200-period at $4,099.88, now sit well beneath spot, left behind once price cleared both to the upside during the early-August sprint.

The Relative Strength Index on the same chart reads 67.97, with its own short-term moving average at 69.86, a hair under the 70 mark traders typically flag as overbought. Read that as a market that has run hard and is now catching its breath, not one that has necessarily run out of road.

Why Gold Jumped: The Fed, The Jobs Data, and A Shipping Lane in the Gulf

Why Gold Jumped: The Fed, The Jobs Data, and A Shipping Lane in the Gulf

Start with the Federal Reserve, because everything else this week has been reacting to it. On 29 July, the Federal Open Market Committee held the federal funds rate at 3.50% to 3.75% by a 9 to 3 vote.2 Three regional presidents, Hammack, Kashkari and Logan, dissented in favour of a hike, making it the most divided FOMC vote since 2016.3 it was also Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s second meeting chairing the Committee, and the hawkish tone that came out of it briefly looked like it would set the tone for August.4

It didn’t last. A run of softer labour data got in the way: US private employers added just 44,000 jobs in July on the ADP count, well under the 75,000 expected, June JOLTS job openings slipped to 7.36 million from 7.54 million, and factory orders contracted 0.3%.5 Markets read the weaker prints as a sign the Fed has more patience than the July vote let on, even with some regional presidents still talking tough in public.

Then there is the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and Oman reached an agreement on a proposed shipping route through the strait, taking some heat out of the energy-driven inflation story that had been propping up rate-hike bets.6 Put a softer labour market and a cooler energy-risk premium together, and gold rallied for four consecutive sessions into Thursday, up nearly 6% on the week at one point as it climbed toward $4,300.7 as covered in Vantage’s 5 August XAUUSD analysis. In XAUUSD news terms, that is about as loud as it gets.

The US dollar, meanwhile, has been the quieter subplot. The Dollar Index fell below 99.8 on Wednesday, its lowest level in seven weeks, and hovered near 99.6 on Thursday.8 choppy enough that gold has had room to run without needing a clean directional dollar move to justify it.

Levels To Watch on The XAUUSD Chart

These are the reference points active traders are watching right now. They describe where price has already reacted, not where this piece thinks it is headed next.

Reference pointLevelWhat the chart is showing

50-period MA (4H)$4,076.52Sits well below spot; price has been trading above this average since the early-August move higher.
200-period MA (4H)$4,099.88Also sits below spot; both moving averages last crossed in gold’s favour during the early-August rally.

What to Watch Next: Jobs Data, Inflation Prints, and Risk

The July US jobs report lands at 8:30 a.m. ET (20:30 GMT+8) today.9 with Wall Street looking for a gain of around 83,000 payrolls and the unemployment rate expected to hold at 4.2%.10 June’s print was a soft 57,000. A weak number today would extend the story that has carried gold this week; a strong beat hands the July dissenters a stronger argument for September.

After that, July CPI is due on 12 August.11 and July PPI on 13 August.12 the two inflation reports markets will likely weigh most heavily ahead of the next FOMC meeting on 15 to 16 September. FOMC minutes are typically released three weeks after a policy decision, which would put minutes from the July meeting around 19 August.13

On risk: gold going from around $4,050 toward $4,300 and back inside a matter of days is not a gentle ride, and intraday ranges have widened to match. A Stop Loss sized for this week’s volatility, rather than one carried over from a calmer stretch, is worth a second look before the jobs data lands.

Leverage, including the 1:1000 ratios available on CFD accounts, cuts both ways in a fast, headline-driven tape like this one, and it is worth remembering that on a day like today. Position sizing relative to account equity matters more than usual heading into a high-volatility release, and anyone holding correlated exposure across gold, the dollar, and rate-sensitive pairs is better off checking the combined picture rather than any single position on its own.

Closing

XAUUSD is sitting just under a recent swing high, momentum stretched but not broken, with the biggest US data release of the month still to come. The chart is telling a story about a market that priced in a more patient Fed than it expected two weeks ago. Whether that story holds past this afternoon is a question for the jobs report, not for this piece.
