USD/MXN, USD to MXN, USD-MXN, USD MXN, or MXN/USD backwards, however you type it, the pair did something worth talking about this week. It traded at 16.95616 as of 16:02 (GMT+8) on 20 August 2026, based on the Vantage USDMXN CFD feed, up a modest 0.02% after opening at 16.95356. Quiet number. What is not quiet is how it got there: a session earlier, USD/MXN was trading near 17.04, and it shed roughly 11 centavos in a matter of hours.

What Happened

The drop unfolded during the 19 August 2026 session, when USD/MXN fell from around 17.04 to a session low near 16.928.1 That was the same session in which the Federal Reserve released its July FOMC minutes, alongside a separate US Treasury announcement that it would roughly double the size of its debt buyback programme, a combination that appeared to weigh on the US Dollar broadly that day.1 The US Dollar Index (DXY) traded near 98.90 straight after the minutes landed, according to FXStreet.1

Since then, the pair has done a lot less. USD/MXN spent the Asian and early European hours of 20 August 2026 boxed in between roughly 16.93 and 16.96, unable to clear the top of that range. It also remains close to territory not traded since mid-2024, after closing at 17.0638 on 18 August 2026, flagged at the time as a two-year high for the Mexican Peso.2

Reading the USD/MXN Chart

Pull up the USD/MXN TradingView chart and the story is written in the moving averages. Price sits below the 50-period average of 17.01306 and just above the 200-period average of 16.94960, both from the same 15-minute Vantage chart used for this USD/MXN technical analysis. The 50-period line has sloped lower all session, a hangover from the prior decline, while the 200-period line sat almost exactly where the sell-off ran out of steam.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) tells a similar tale. It fell below 30 during the sharpest part of the decline, based on the TradingView setup used for this analysis, and has since climbed back to 52.67, with its moving average at 53.14. Neither extreme, neither exciting, just a market catching its breath. Momentum recovering while price stays capped below the 50-period average reads as consolidation, not a fresh trend confirming itself.

What Is Driving USD/MXN Today

What Is Driving USD/MXN Today

Zoom out and the real engine here is the interest rate gap between the Fed and the Bank of Mexico. The Fed held its rate at 3.50% to 3.75% at its 28-29 July 2026 meeting, a decision three regional presidents dissented against in favour of an immediate hike.3 Banxico, on the other side of the border, held its own rate at 6.50% on 6 August 2026, a second straight hold, with policymakers pencilling in a 3% inflation goal that will not sustainably arrive until the fourth quarter of 2027.2,4

That roughly 275 to 300 basis point gap is the whole reason currency traders keep talking about the Peso carry trade, where investors borrow Dollars cheaply to hold higher-yielding Peso assets.2 Net long Peso positioning hit 83,700 contracts for the week ending 14 August 2026, up 9.4% week-on-week and the highest since before the US-Iran conflict began in late February 2026, per Techtimes.2 Whatever your own USD to MXN forecast might be, that positioning data says more than any single candle.

What to Watch Next

Banxico is due to publish the minutes of its 6 August meeting later today, which could show how split the board was on timing.4 Then comes the bigger date: the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium runs 27 to 29 August 2026, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first keynote as Chair on the morning of Friday, 28 August, under three weeks before the September FOMC meeting.5

Warsh has said the speech leans towards long-term structural questions rather than near-term guidance. Even so, any shift in tone around the current rate range could ripple through US Dollar pairs, USD/MXN included, given how tightly this pair has tracked the Fed-Banxico gap all month.5,6

Risk Considerations

Volatility around scheduled events like Banxico’s minutes and Jackson Hole can move USD/MXN and other emerging-market pairs quickly. A Stop Loss is one tool traders use to define, in advance, the point at which a position closes, helping manage exposure to sudden moves rather than reacting after they happen.

Leverage lets a trader control a larger position than their account balance alone would allow, and Vantage offers leverage of up to 1:1000 on eligible accounts. It is a double-edged tool: leverage magnifies outcomes both ways, so it can affect an account balance as much on the downside as the upside, which makes position sizing worth real thought.

RISK WARNING: CFDs are complex financial instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should ensure you fully understand the risks involved and carefully consider whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money before trading.
