Moderna (MRNA) stock traded at $174.93 as of 07:35 UTC on 20 August 2026, up from $62.96 two sessions earlier, after Moderna and Merck’s mRNA cancer vaccine cleared a Phase 3 melanoma trial. RSI sits at 78.79, well above overbought, with volume running above average.

Well, that escalated quickly. Moderna’s ticker, MRNA, drifted quietly through most of 2026, then in two sessions became the loudest name on the Nasdaq. If you landed here hunting for a Moderna stock forecast or Moderna stock predictions, we’ll say it plainly: that’s not what this is. What follows is a straight read of the MRNA stock price, the chart, and the newsflow behind it, as of 07:35 UTC (15:35 GMT+8) on 20 August 2026.

Moderna, once known as Moderna Therapeutics, saw its stock price catapult from $62.96 to $174.38 in a single session on 19 August 2026, then hold most of those gains into the next day. [3,4] Anyone who last checked the Moderna Therapeutics stock price years ago would barely recognise this chart. Not normal, even for a stock with Moderna’s history of violent swings.

Key points

  • Moderna and Merck’s mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, met its primary and key secondary endpoints in the Phase 3 INTerpath-001 melanoma trial, the first positive late-stage result for an mRNA-based cancer therapy. [1,2]
  • MRNA closed 19 August 2026 at $174.38, up 176.97% on volume of roughly 185.1 million shares, ~1,819% above average. [3]
  • The Moderna stock price extended gains into 20 August, last near $174.93 as of the 07:35 UTC cut-off, with RSI at 78.79 against its moving average of 74.31, still overbought.

Moderna stock charts: what today’s candle shows

On the 15-minute chart used for this analysis, the current candle opened at $169.27, hit a high of $176.60, a low of $167.78, and last traded at $174.93. Volume stood at 743.08K, a fraction of the prior day’s surge but still elevated against the flat, low-volume pattern seen through early-to-mid August.

The 50-period moving average sat at 74.02 and the 200-period at 108.44, both well below price given how far the stock drifted before the catalyst; the averages have not caught up and are not, alone, a signal to read into. The RSI (14, close) on the TradingView setup used for this analysis read 78.79 against its moving average of 74.31, both above the 70 overbought threshold. An overnight marker on the chart placed a reference level at $158.06.

The catalyst: why MRNA stock is moving

Moderna and Merck announced on 19 August 2026 that intismeran autogene (V940, mRNA-4157), an individualised neoantigen therapy, met the primary endpoint of recurrence-free survival and the key secondary endpoint of distant metastasis-free survival in Phase 3, combined with Keytruda versus Keytruda alone, across 1,137 patients with resected stage IIB-IV melanoma. [1,2]

TD Cowen analyst Tyler Van Buren called it a “landmark moment”, while William Blair’s Myles Minter called it hard to overstate, given a company still built mainly on infectious-disease vaccines. [7,8] Barclays had separately estimated $3B in annual melanoma sales by 2035 from earlier data; JPMorgan calls the vaccine central to profitability. [9]

The readout follows the FDA’s 4 August approval of Moderna’s mFLUSIVA flu vaccine, its fourth approved US product, and lands weeks after Moderna’s Q2 2026 earnings beat consensus. [6,10]

Moderna stock analysis: the market reaction

The reaction showed up everywhere: Moderna added an estimated $40 billion in market capitalisation on 19 August 2026, Merck rose as much as 11%, and the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index hit a record. [5] One of the more overlooked moderna stocks is now the most talked-about ticker, which is why technical analysis matters as much as the fundamentals right now.

Moderna stock outlook and risk checklist

Reference points, not recommendations. Given the move’s scale and an RSI still above 70, volatility in share CFDs such as Moderna is likely to stay elevated, and leverage applied either way carries proportionally larger risk while that persists.

  • A Stop Loss does not prevent losses outright, but it can help limit losses to a planned size relative to account equity.
  • Position sizing proportional to account equity, not to the size of the previous session’s move, is a foundational habit regardless of recent performance.
  • Combined exposure across correlated healthcare names is worth reviewing after a catalyst this size.
  • Leverage remains a double-edged consideration when sizing any position in Moderna or another share CFD.

What to watch next

  • Full trial data, date TBC: Complete INTerpath-001 results, including hazard ratios, are due at an upcoming international medical meeting. [1]
  • Regulatory filings, ongoing: The companies are engaging with regulators on submissions for intismeran autogene plus Keytruda. [1]
  • mFLUSIVA launch, 2026–27 season: Moderna’s newly approved flu vaccine targets a US launch this respiratory season. [6]
  • Volume and volatility, ongoing: Turnover remains well above average following the 19 August spike.

The Moderna MRNA stock story just wrote its biggest chapter yet. For more Moderna news, broader market news, or what else is trending on the Nasdaq, Vantage Markets keeps the coverage running.
