[DAILY TRADING] USDJPY Analysis 13 August 2026 — Dollar Holds 159.40 as CPI Meets Forecast, Eyes PPI Next
USDJPY news today comes with a bit of a plot twist: after a session that looked ready to crack, the pair has clawed its way back to almost exactly where it started. The Vantage USDJPY CFD traded at 159.434 as of 00:20 (GMT+8) on 13 August 2026, up a slim 0.009 on the last 15-minute candle, per the TradingView setup used for this analysis. This USD/JPY forecast reads the 15-minute chart and the macro story sitting behind it. It does not call a trade. All prices below are as of the stated cut-off time, and the chart shown is indicative only.
What the USDJPY Chart is Showing

USDJPY had itself a proper wobble. The pair spiked to a session low near 158.60, clawed back some ground, then slipped to a second, slightly higher low near 158.70. From there, buyers took over and the USDJPY chart rallied hard, tagging a session high near 159.55 before grinding sideways just under that level. A pullback into the 159.20 area followed, then a second, smaller push back up toward 159.50, easing into the cut-off at 159.434: barely moved on that final candle, but a sizeable round trip overall.
At the close, USDJPY sat above both moving averages on the 15-minute timeframe: the 50-period read 159.293, the 200-period read 159.402. That is a mildly constructive setup, though the gap between the two is thin enough to close quickly if momentum stalls. The 14-period RSI, per the TradingView setup used for this analysis, last printed 56.25, with a second reading from the same indicator setup at 51.95. Both sit in that unremarkable middle ground: firm, not stretched.
The Macro Backdrop Moving USD to JPY

USDJPY news today still carries the fingerprints of last week’s coordinated Japan-US intervention, which dragged the USD to JPY pair down from above 163.50 toward 155.00 in early August, after Japan’s finance minister confirmed the joint yen purchases and left the door open to more1, with the yen briefly weakening back past 159 per dollar.7 USDJPY closed near 159.30 on 11 August, roughly 2.8% off the 163.85 peak set on 28 July, summing up the standoff neatly: a wide US-Japan rate gap on one side, intervention-shy policymakers on the other.1
Wednesday’s US CPI print landed right on script, matching the 3.4% forecast.6 Headline inflation rose 0.1% in July, with the annual rate easing to 3.4% from 3.5%.2 Core CPI rose 0.2% month-on-month and 2.5% year-on-year, both in line with consensus.8 Shelter costs did most of the work, up 0.1% and responsible for roughly two-thirds of the monthly gain, while energy fell 1.5%.2 The in-line number appeared to coincide with the pair’s steadier tone, even though average hourly earnings slipped 0.2% year-on-year, with wage gains lagging inflation for four straight months.3
On policy, the Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.50%-3.75% on 29 July with 3 dissents favouring a hike, a hawkish-leaning hold even as July payrolls fell by 23,000.1 The Bank of Japan held its interest rate at 1.00% on 31 July by an 8-1 vote, and Governor Ueda’s press conference tone was read by strategists as moderately hawkish.4,5 That roughly 250 to 275 basis point policy gap is still calling the shots for USDJPY.1

Risk Considerations for USDJPY Traders
Given today’s round trip, from the mid-158.60s to the mid-159.50s and back, Stop Loss placement relative to the 158.70/159.55 zone is worth a second look. A Stop Loss limits losses to a planned size; it does not prevent one outright, and nothing here is a signal to open or close a position. Traders holding correlated yen exposure, such as EUR/JPY or GBP/JPY, may also want to check combined exposure, since intervention headlines have moved the yen sharply across pairs recently. More in the Vantage risk management hub.
Leverage is a double-edged tool: it can just as easily magnify losses as gains on a pair as headline-sensitive as USDJPY right now, particularly around data releases and any fresh comments from Japanese or US officials on intervention. Position sizing relative to account equity is worth revisiting ahead of Thursday’s PPI and retail sales prints, and traders running higher leverage ratios such as 1:1000 should size positions accordingly rather than by margin available alone.
