Vantage is a global, multi-asset broker with a team of in-house writers and market analysts who produce educational and insightful trading content for traders of all levels.

As of 10:32 on 13 August 2026 (platform/chart time; UTC offset unconfirmed), the Vantage USD/CAD CFD sits at 1.39463, barely above where the last candle opened. Don’t let that fool you. USD to CAD swung more than 40 pips this week, from near 1.3910 to near 1.3950, before settling back into the middle. That’s a tug of war, not a trend, and it played out alongside Wednesday’s US CPI release and this week’s tariff and oil headlines. This USDCAD forecast reads the chart and the news flow, not the trade.

What the USDCAD Chart is Showing

USDCAD_2026-08-13_13-19-30
Figure 1: USDCAD 15-Minute Chart “Session Round Trip From 1.3910 to Near 1.3950, With MA50/MA200 and RSI” (TradingView, chart provided by editor) Accessed on 13 August 2026. Data indicative, for informational purposes only.

On the 15-minute chart, USD/CAD held a quiet range through Tuesday into Wednesday, drifting between roughly 1.3919 and 1.3935, above its 50-period moving average at 1.39322. That calm broke during Wednesday’s session: a sharp slide dragged the pair toward 1.3910, pushing price under both moving averages and into Relative Strength Index (RSI) oversold territory, based on the TradingView setup used for this analysis.

The drop didn’t stick. Buyers showed up hard later in Wednesday’s session, and USD/CAD climbed back to a high near 1.3950, reclaiming the 200-period moving average at 1.39437 along the way. RSI climbed back above 70 during that rally, then eased to 53.87, now below its own 62.89 moving average. A fast round trip followed by cooling momentum usually means the market found a floor, not a fresh direction.

What’s Driving USD/CAD Today

What's Driving USD/CAD Today

Start with the US side. The Consumer Price Index rose 0.1% month on month in July, and the annual rate eased to 3.4% from 3.5% in June. 12 Core inflation cooled to 2.5%, in line with expectations. Yet CME FedWatch pricing pushed the odds of the Fed holding rates steady at its 15 to 16 September meeting to around 62%, from roughly 52% the day before. 3

Now Canada. Data released last week showed the labour market adding jobs well above forecasts, coinciding with the Canadian dollar trading at an eight-week high. 4 The Bank of Canada (BoC) has held its policy rate at 2.25% for six straight meetings, and its outlook flags US trade policy as a key swing factor for growth. 5 Swap markets price in little chance of a near-term BoC move either way. 6

Then there’s the elephant in the room: a 50% US tariff on Canadian goods takes effect on 19 August. 7 Oil is a mixed signal, not a clean tailwind for the loonie. WTI crude has held in the low-USD82-to-83 range, near a one-and-a-half-week high, as Middle East supply risk offsets a surprise 17.4-million-barrel build in US crude inventories. 8 Two forces pulling opposite ways rarely make a clean USD / CAD chart, and this week is proof of that.

Levels to Watch on USDCAD

The table below sets out where price has reacted this week. These are chart levels, not trade signals.

Risk Considerations for USDCAD Traders

Given the round trip already seen this week, and with the tariff deadline still ahead, volatility could stay elevated. A Stop Loss doesn’t prevent a loss; it limits losses to a planned size, and where to place one relative to the 1.3910 to 1.3950 range comes down to each trader’s own risk tolerance. Correlated exposure across other commodity currencies or oil-linked instruments is worth checking, since a shift in the tariff story or the Fed’s rate path could move several markets at once.

Leverage, for example 1:1000, cuts both ways in a market moving as sharply as USDCAD did on Wednesday. Position sizing is worth a second look ahead of 19 August, since both leverage and Stop Loss placement affect account balance, not the outcome of any single trade.

What to Watch Next

  • US PPI, this week: next US inflation gauge before the September Fed meeting
  • Tariff deadline, 19 August: 50% US tariff on Canadian goods takes effect
  • FOMC meeting, 15 to 16 September: the Fed’s next scheduled rate decision
  • BoC rate decision, 2 September: next scheduled announcement after six straight holds at 2.25%9

USDCAD’s bounce from 1.3910 toward 1.3950 captures a market digesting cooler US inflation, a resilient Canadian jobs backdrop, and a tariff deadline that hasn’t gone away. Momentum has cooled since Wednesday’s rally, and the pair looks to be consolidating rather than confirming a clear direction. Any USD/CAD forecast, or its mirror image, a CAD to USD forecast, looks similarly undecided. For anyone tracking USD and CAD together, the next test is whichever headline moves first.
