[DAILY TRADING] USDJPY Analysis 11 August 2026: Yen Holds Near 159.35 as Intervention Risk Meets US CPI
USD/JPY news today comes with a familiar subplot: yen intervention risk still simmering as the chart tries to move on. USDJPY, USD/JPY, USD JPY, however you type it, the Vantage USDJPY CFD trades at 159.348 as of the 07:12 (GMT+8) cut-off on 11 August 2026. Its latest 15-minute candle is essentially flat, down just 0.015 points on that candle’s own open, but zoom out and the session has not been flat at all: USDJPY has climbed back from an overnight low near 158.1 to retest the top of its recent range.
This USDJPY forecast reads the chart and the headlines; it does not call the trade. USDJPY trades under that range’s top, above its faster 50-period moving average near 159.23 and slower 200-period average near 158.52, inside the band last week’s Japan-US intervention carved out.
USD/JPY Chart Check: What the 15-Minute Candles are Saying

Rewind to the early hours of 10 August: USD/JPY traded near 157.6, then built a mostly steady staircase of green candles into a first peak above 159.36 around the 09:00 to 10:30 window. From there it pulled back toward 158.5 by midday, found its footing, and pushed to a second high in the same 159.36 zone near 19:30. What followed was sharper: a drop to about 158.1 in the early hours of 11 August, before the pair steadied and worked back to 159.3 by the 07:00 to 08:00 window, roughly where USDJPY sits as this goes to print.
Momentum backs that up. The 14-period RSI on the TradingView setup used for this analysis sits at 63.19, above its own moving average of 54.66, up from a low near the high 30s during the overnight dip. That is constructive without being stretched. The RSI only flirted with overbought territory, high 70s to low 80s, at the two 159.36 peaks, matching where the candles ran out of steam both times.
The Fundamental Backdrop: Intervention Memory and a Fed on Hold

USDJPY’s tight range makes more sense given the last two weeks. Japan’s Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Japan bought yen on 30 July, then followed a day later with a coordinated operation alongside the US Treasury, the first joint intervention between the two countries since 2011. 1
Tokyo may have sold close to $58.97 billion doing it, per Bank of Japan data cited by Al Jazeera. 2 Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed Washington’s role and signalled both sides stand ready to step in again if warranted. 1 Bloomberg, citing the Financial Times, reported the operation ran partly through euro-yen crosses, with the New York Fed selling euros to buy yen for the Treasury. 5
Japan’s Finance Ministry framed the action as addressing “excessive volatility and disorderly movements” in the yen, and flagged plans to tap the Fed’s FIMA repo facility for future operations, a way to raise dollar liquidity without selling Treasury holdings outright. 1 Monex Group’s Jesper Koll has since described the episode as effectively weaponising the yen as a policy tool. 6 Layered on top, weaker-than-expected US jobs data last Friday coincided with traders trimming near-term Fed hike bets and a sharp yen bid. 3 USDJPY has since given most of that move back.
Next up: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ July Consumer Price Index, due Wednesday, 12 August 2026 at 08:30 ET (20:30 GMT+8). 4 A hotter print tends to firm dollar demand and would test how much of the current yen strength is intervention-driven rather than data-driven; a cooler one tends to work the other way. Either way, expect USDJPY to move fast.
USDJPY Levels Traders are Watching
A few zones stand out on the chart as of the cut-off. The 159.36-159.40 band has capped two advances since 10 August, just under the round 160.00 level, the top of the pair’s recent range. On the downside, the 50-period average near 159.23 is the nearest support, tracking closely below price; the slower 200-period average near 158.52 sits further down, with the overnight low near 158.10 next below that.
| Zone | Level | What’s happening |
| Resistance | 159.36 – 159.40 | Session highs tested twice since 10 August, capping the advance so far |
| Resistance | 160.00 | Round psychological level and the top of the pair’s recent range |
| Support | 159.20 / 159.23 | 50-period moving average, tracking closely just below price |
| Support | 158.50 / 158.52 | 200-period moving average, a deeper reference below the 50-period line |
| Support | 158.10 | Overnight pullback low into 11 August |

What to Watch Next
- US CPI, 12 August 2026: July inflation data lands at 08:30 ET (20:30 GMT+8). Watch core month-on-month and headline year-on-year against consensus.
- Verbal or actual intervention: Renewed comments from Japan’s Ministry of Finance or the Bank of Japan remain a live risk while USDJPY holds under 160.00.
- US dollar positioning more broadly: Moves in the wider dollar index around CPI are worth cross-checking against USDJPY given the shared driver.
Risk Considerations
USDJPY has moved more than 150 pips within a single session on more than one occasion over the past two weeks, and headline-driven intervention risk means that pattern can repeat with little warning. Stop Loss placement around the levels above is one way traders manage that exposure, and it limits losses to a planned size rather than leaving a position open to an unexpected headline.
Leverage is available up to 1:1000 on eligible Vantage accounts and works both ways, so any capacity used is best treated as a facility rather than a target to fill. Position sizing relative to account equity is worth revisiting ahead of Wednesday’s CPI release, particularly for traders holding correlated positions across other US dollar or yen pairs.
