Forty years. That’s roughly how far back you’d need to rewind to find USDJPY this high, and this week even that milestone got boring fast. The Vantage USDJPY CFD traded at 163.728 as of 07:58 UTC (15:58 GMT+8) on 30 July 2026, up 0.02% on the 15-minute candle. Whether you search usdjpy, usd jpy, or USDJPY news today, this USDJPY forecast reads what the chart and the news actually show. Levels below are as of the cut-off. Charts are from TradingView. This is not financial advice.

Key points

  • The Vantage USDJPY CFD held near 163.73, above both its 50-period (163.675) and 200-period (163.482) moving averages.
  • RSI read 70.74 on the TradingView setup used for this analysis, with the RSI moving average at 59.35.
  • The Fed held rates at 3.50%–3.75% on 29 July; three regional presidents dissented for a hike, the widest split since 2016.

What the USDJPY chart is showing

Zoom out on the USDJPY chart and the week reads like a held breath followed by a jump. The pair opened near 162.90 on 23 July, climbed into the 163.80–163.90 zone by 24 July, then traded largely within the 163.6–163.9 region over the following sessions. It got a reason to move on 29 July, when the Fed’s decision knocked it down toward 163.30 before buyers gradually lifted the pair back toward its pre-decision range. By 30 July, USDJPY had clawed back most of that drop, trading at 163.728 as of the cut-off, above both moving averages on the chart.

The 50-period average sits at 163.675 and the 200-period at 163.482, both beneath current price. The RSI read 70.74 on the TradingView setup used for this analysis, above the 70 line traders watch for stretched momentum, while its RSI moving average sat lower, at 59.35. Volume on the latest bar came in at 2.27K on the Vantage CFD feed, unremarkable by this week’s standards.

The two forces shaping the yen right now

A Fed hold with an unusually split vote

The Federal Reserve held rates at 3.50% to 3.75% on 29 July, at what Chair Kevin Warsh called his second FOMC meeting in charge.1

The vote wasn’t unanimous. Cleveland’s Beth Hammack, Minneapolis’s Neel Kashkari, and Dallas’s Lorie Logan all pushed for a quarter-point hike, the widest three-way split since September 2016.2

Warsh didn’t dodge the disagreement, telling reporters he had asked for ‘a good family fight’ and got one.3 The statement acknowledged elevated uncertainty around the economic outlook while policymakers continued to monitor inflation risks.1 Attention now shifts to the 30 July core PCE print, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, due later today.4

For USDJPY, the takeaway is a Fed that held as expected but showed real cracks underneath. The 163.30 dip on 29 July lines up with the announcement window, and price has spent the hours since retracing it rather than extending it.

The BOJ’s Friday decision and a four-decade low for the yen

The other half of this pair carries its own event risk. The BOJ’s Policy Board meets over two days, 30 to 31 July, with the decision due Friday.5 The rate has held at 1.00% since a 25 basis point hike in June, a move that passed 7-1 and took it to its highest since 1995.6

Markets generally expected the BOJ to leave policy unchanged this week, so the real event is Governor Kazuo Ueda’s tone, and whether the GDP forecast gets an upward nudge.7 A Reuters poll cited in market commentary has most economists expecting the rate at 1.50% or higher by mid-2027, so a hold now reads as a pause, not the end of the story.6

The yen has spent the week near a roughly four-decade low, down 0.57% over the past month on top of an 8.41% slide over the past year.8 Japanese officials keep warning about intervention without acting on it.6 For USDJPY, Ueda’s words matter more than the decision itself.

What to watch this week and beyond

  • BOJ Decision, 31 July: Broadly priced as a hold near 1.00%. Ueda’s tone on timing is the bigger swing factor.
  • US Core PCE, 30 July: The Fed’s preferred gauge, landing after a decision that flagged elevated uncertainty and ongoing inflation monitoring.
  • Yen Intervention Rhetoric, Ongoing: All talk so far, no action. Any shift in tone is the wildcard for sharp intraday moves.

USDJPY has swung hard both ways this week, with the 29 July dip and recovery playing out inside hours. Market participants often watch levels like the moving averages above when weighing exposure on this pair, especially with two central bank events landing back to back.

Leverage cuts both ways in a week this loaded with event risk. Position sizing relative to account equity is worth a second look ahead of the BOJ decision and the PCE print.
