US Non-Farm Payrolls: One Critical Report Moving Gold, Bitcoin and the US Dollar Simultaneously
Every first Friday of the month, traders around the world stop what they’re doing for one economic report.
Within seconds of its release, Gold, the US Dollar, Bitcoin and major stock indices can all begin moving sharply.
That report is the US Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP).
While it measures employment in the United States, its impact extends far beyond the labour market, often reshaping expectations for interest rates and driving volatility across global financial markets.
What is Non-Farm Payrolls?
The Non-Farm Payrolls report measures how many jobs were created or lost across the US economy during the previous month.
It excludes farm workers, private household employees, non-profit organisations and active military personnel, allowing economists to focus on the sectors that make up the majority of US economic activity.
Rather than looking at employment in isolation, investors use the report to assess the overall strength of the US economy and whether inflationary pressures may be building through the labour market.
The chart below shows total US non-farm employment over time, highlighting how the labour market has expanded over the past several decades despite periods of economic downturn.

How can one jobs report move so many markets?
Markets don’t react to the jobs number itself, they react to what the data could mean for future Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.
A stronger labour market may support expectations that interest rates remain higher for longer, while weaker employment data may increase expectations of a less restrictive policy outlook.
Those changing expectations often influence the US dollar, bond yields, gold, cryptocurrencies and global equity markets.
This week we take a look at three charts: Gold, AUD/USD and Bitcoin:
Gold: Waiting for the Next Catalyst

Gold is often one of the first assets to react after major US economic data releases because its price is highly sensitive to changes in interest rate expectations.
Ahead of Friday’s Non-Farm Payrolls report, the precious metal is trading around US$4,054 per ounce as investors await fresh clues on the Federal Reserve’s next policy move.
Technical Analysis
Gold remains in a short-term consolidation phase after its recent rally.
Immediate resistance sits around US$4,100, with a break above potentially opening the door towards US$4,180.
On the downside, US$4,000 remains an important psychological support level, followed by US$3,950.
AUD/USD: Watching the US Dollar

While domestic economic data has remained relatively resilient, the Australian dollar continues to take direction from movements in the US dollar ahead of Friday’s Non-Farm Payrolls report.
A stronger-than-expected employment report could support the greenback, while weaker data may weigh on the US dollar and provide support for AUD/USD.
Technical Analysis
AUD/USD is testing an important technical area around its 200-day Simple Moving Average, making this one of the key levels traders are monitoring.
Immediate resistance is located near 0.7050-0.7088, while 0.7000 remains an important psychological support, followed by 0.6920.
BITCOIN: Can Bitcoin Rebuild Momentum From Here?

Unlike traditional safe-haven assets, Bitcoin often responds to shifts in market sentiment and liquidity.
Changes in interest rate expectations following Friday’s payrolls report could influence investors’ appetite for higher-risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.
Technical Analysis
Bitcoin continues trading near an important demand zone after its recent pullback.
Holding above current support may encourage buyers to retest the US$65,000 level, while a break lower could expose the US$62,000 area.
What traders should watch
Rather than focusing only on the headline payroll number, experienced traders also monitor:
- Payrolls vs market expectations
- Unemployment rate
- Average Hourly Earnings (wage growth)
- Revisions to previous months
- Initial market reaction versus follow-through
Sometimes the wage data or revisions end up having a larger market impact than the headline jobs figure itself.
Bottom Line
The Non-Farm Payrolls report is far more than a monthly employment update.
It is one of the most closely watched economic releases because it helps shape expectations for interest rates, monetary policy and overall market sentiment.
Whether you trade Gold, AUD/USD, Bitcoin or US equity indices, understanding how the labour market influences financial markets can help you better interpret price movements, not just on Friday, but throughout the broader economic cycle
