Meta Q2 Preview: Can Advertising Keep Funding Meta’s AI Ambitions?
Meta Platforms reports its second-quarter 2026 earnings after the US market closes on Wednesday, with investors focused on far more than whether the company can beat estimates.
The advertising business remains exceptionally strong and Wall Street broadly expects another solid quarter. However, the conversation has shifted. The key question is no longer whether Meta can grow revenue, but whether its rapidly expanding AI investment is beginning to generate returns that justify one of the largest capital spending programs in corporate history.
Over the past year, investors rewarded companies that aggressively increased AI spending. Today, that enthusiasm has become more selective. Following Alphabet’s sharp sell-off after raising its capital expenditure guidance last week, markets will be looking closely at whether Meta can convince investors that every additional dollar invested into AI infrastructure will eventually translate into stronger earnings.
With Meta shares trading almost 25% below their 52-week high despite another year of robust revenue growth, this earnings report could become an important turning point for sentiment.
The Q1 Baseline: Strong Advertising, Rising AI Costs

Meta enters its second-quarter earnings with momentum across its core advertising business.
During Q1 2026 the company delivered:
• Revenue of $56.31 billion, increasing 33% year-on-year
• EPS of $7.31, comfortably beating consensus expectations
• Ad impressions rising 19%
• Average advertising prices increasing 12%
Despite outperforming expectations, the share price declined following the results after management increased its full-year capital expenditure forecast to between $125 billion and $145 billion, signalling that AI investment would continue accelerating.
Earnings Expectations: Another Beat May Not Be Enough
Consensus forecasts suggest another solid quarter for Meta.
Revenue: ~$60.2 billion
EPS: $7.13–$7.23
Revenue Growth: ~26.6% YoY
Advertising Revenue: ~$59 billion
Company Guidance: $58–61 billion
Meta has exceeded EPS expectations during each of the past four quarters, with analysts again expecting a modest beat.
Bank of America maintains a Buy rating with an $835 price target, highlighting continued advertising strength and improving operating efficiency following recent workforce reductions.
However, investors are likely to spend less time analysing the earnings beat itself and far more time listening to management’s commentary surrounding AI investment.

Technical Analysis: Meta Tests a Key Decision Zone Ahead of Earnings
From a technical perspective, Meta is approaching one of its most important price levels of the year, with the stock currently trading around the mid-Bollinger Band near $595. This area has repeatedly acted as both support and resistance over recent months, making it a critical battleground ahead of earnings.
The timing is particularly important. Earnings often act as a catalyst for a decisive move, and with investor positioning heavily influenced by AI expectations, a strong or weak report could determine whether Meta breaks out of its recent trading range or extends its correction.
Key Levels to Watch
Resistance: $650-$700
The first hurdle remains the $650 region, which aligns with the July swing highs and a significant technical resistance zone. A convincing break above this level, particularly if accompanied by stronger-than-expected guidance and reassuring commentary around AI spending, would likely improve the medium-term technical outlook. In that scenario, buyers could target the psychological $700 level, with momentum potentially accelerating if investors regain confidence in Meta’s AI investment strategy.
Support: $575-$550
On the downside, the $575-$550 region represents a major support zone formed during the April-June consolidation period. This area previously attracted buyers after several pullbacks and may once again provide support if earnings disappoint. However, a decisive break below this range would suggest that selling pressure is intensifying and could signal a deeper correction, particularly if management raises capital expenditure guidance without providing stronger evidence that AI investments are translating into meaningful earnings growth.
Technical Outlook
For now, Meta remains trapped between two well-defined technical levels, with the earnings announcement likely to determine its next directional move.
A sustained move above $650 would strengthen the bullish technical structure and shift focus towards $700 and potentially new recovery highs over the coming months.
Conversely, if the company delivers cautious guidance or investors react negatively to additional AI spending, the stock could revisit the $575-$550 support zone, where buyers would need to step in to preserve the longer-term uptrend.

Bottom Line
The advertising business remains exceptionally healthy, and another earnings beat would not be surprising.
Instead, investors will focus almost entirely on management’s outlook for AI spending.
The biggest questions remain:
• Will Meta increase capital expenditure again?
• Is AI beginning to generate measurable returns?
• Can margins stabilise despite record investment?
Consensus sentiment remains constructive. However, with the stock still trading well below its previous highs and expectations elevated heading into earnings, guidance around AI investment may ultimately prove more important than the headline numbers themselves.
