August 2026 Preview: A Window Before the Next Round of Macro Winds
July gave Australian markets something they badly needed: a softer inflation print and a little more breathing space.
But August will decide whether that relief can hold.
After a volatile first half shaped by sticky inflation, higher-for-longer rates, energy shocks and sharp swings across equities, currencies and commodities, the market is entering the new month with a narrow window. The pressure appears to have eased, but the next tests are already lining up.
For Australian traders and investors, August comes down to one key question: can the RBA stay on the sidelines with more confidence? That will depend not only on local inflation data, but also on whether geopolitical tensions fade enough to keep the disinflation process moving smoothly.
Australia’s Inflation Reprieve
July handed Australian markets a limited inflation reprieve, with June’s CPI line easing from its March peak and the latest monthly move slipping slightly into negative territory. But the chart also shows why the relief is not yet strong enough to call a clean turning point: inflation has cooled, but it is still sitting well above the RBA’s target band.

That makes August less about celebrating one softer CPI print and more about testing whether the disinflation trend can hold. Markets have gained some breathing space, but the next round of RBA guidance, labour data and ASX earnings will decide whether July’s relief was the start of a broader cooling cycle or just another temporary pause in a still-sticky inflation story.
The RBA’s August Test
The RBA meets on August 11, and the decision itself may be less important than the tone. The cash-rate futures curve suggests markets are not pricing a rapid pivot lower; instead, expectations remain clustered around a higher-for-longer path well into 2027. That means a hold may calm near-term nerves, but it would not automatically turn the policy story dovish.
The August Statement on Monetary Policy will be critical. If inflation forecasts are revised lower, markets may treat it as confirmation that the peak in rates has arrived. If the RBA keeps warning about services inflation, wages, rents and energy risks, the pause may look more like a waiting game than a turning point.
The futures curve suggests markets have stepped back from pricing an immediate RBA hike, but not far enough to declare the tightening risk dead — another move could still stay on the table into 2027 if inflation proves sticky again.

ASX Earnings Season: The Macro Story Meets Company Reality
August is also ASX earnings season, and this is where the macro story meets company reality.
The Australian market has spent months trading around inflation, the RBA, bond yields and global risk appetite. Earnings season will test whether companies can still defend margins, manage costs and guide with confidence in a slower-growth, higher-rate economy.
Banks will be watched for mortgage stress, deposit competition and credit growth. Retailers will give a cleaner read on household spending. Resources remain tied to China demand and commodity prices, while healthcare and infrastructure names need to prove that defensive earnings still justify premium valuations.
The key question is not just whether companies beat or miss expectations. It is whether management teams sound confident enough to support the next leg of the ASX.
Labour Market Watch: Softening, But Not Breaking
The labour market is the second domestic test for August. June unemployment stayed at 4.4%, showing that the economy is losing some heat, but not enough to suggest a sharp downturn is already underway.
For the RBA, that keeps the balance delicate. A softer labour market gives the Board more room to stay on hold, especially if wage pressure starts to cool with it. But the data has not weakened enough to give markets a clean rate-cut story either. August’s jobs data will show whether the slowdown remains controlled or starts to bite harder.
Global Policy Watch: The Set-Up Before September
Globally, August also looks more like a positioning month before the next major policy reset. US CPI, US payrolls and Jackson Hole will all matter because they can reshape expectations for bond yields, the US dollar and global risk appetite before central banks return to the spotlight in September.
For Australian markets, the global policy story matters through three channels. A stronger US dollar could pressure the Australian dollar. A renewed rise in bond yields could weigh on growth stocks and gold. And any hawkish message from Jackson Hole could quickly challenge the idea that global policy pressure has peaked.
Softer US data would give markets more room to believe that the worst of the rate shock is behind us. But if inflation stays sticky or the labour market remains too resilient, August’s calm could quickly turn into another round of yield-driven volatility.
Bottom Line
August may not bring the full storm. But it is the month where markets decide how much protection they want before the next one arrives.
