ASX 200 Continues to Look for Momentum
- ASX 200 remains under pressure, showing continued weakness.
- Global markets struggle, with Europe being the exception.
- Commodities remain a key concern for Australian companies.
- ASX doesn’t get much of a lift despite a weakening Australian dollar.
The ASX 200 saw a slight rally during the early hours on Wednesday but remains subdued. The AU$7,900 level continues to act as a significant resistance point, with the market currently in a phase of consolidation. This is unsurprising, given that four central banks are set to meet this week, which will heavily influence global risk sentiment and currency markets. Consequently, commodities will also play a crucial role in shaping the direction of the Australian stock market.

CSL Limited (CSL)
CSL gained 1.05% during Wednesday’s trading session, closing at AU$250.29.Despite this uptick, the healthcare company has had a challenging year, falling 10.35% overall. It has also declined by 5.13% over the past month. However, the recent price action suggests that buyers may be starting to return. The size of Wednesday’s candlestick is notable, raising the question of whether there will be further momentum. That said, CSL remains firmly in a downtrend.

National Australia Bank Limited (NAB)
National Australia Bank Limited gained 18 cents during Wednesday’s trading session, closing at AU$32.65. Despite this slight rebound, the financial giant has faced significant selling pressure over the past month, plunging 17.36%. The market has broken below the key AU$33 support level, which has historically been a strong floor. Volume is increasing, indicating that selling pressure is intensifying rather than easing. Additionally, the formation of the so-called “death cross,” where the 50-day EMA crosses below the 200-day EMA, suggests further downside potential. This widely watched technical indicator is likely to attract attention from long-term traders.

Sigma Healthcare Limited (SIG)
Sigma Healthcare declined 1.36% during Wednesday’s trading session, reflecting the broader market’s negative sentiment. Despite this short-term pullback, the healthcare giant remains up an impressive 132.80% year-to-date, although it has lost 5.83% over the past month. Currently, the stock is hovering around the 50-day EMA and trading just below the psychologically significant AU$3.00 level. However, the overall trend remains strong, with buyers consistently stepping in on pullbacks, suggesting continued confidence in the stock’s long-term prospects.

Origin Energy Limited (ORG)
Origin Energy fell by 1.94% during Wednesday’s trading session, as even the traditionally defensive utilities sector faced selling pressure. Despite this decline, the stock remains up 0.47% for the month and 16.36% over the past year. In recent months, Origin Energy has been trading within a defined range, fluctuating between the AU$10.00 support level and the AU$11.40 resistance level. At present, the stock is positioned near the midpoint of this range, reflecting ongoing market indecision.
