Vantage is a global, multi-asset broker with a team of in-house writers and market analysts who produce educational and insightful trading content for traders of all levels.

Four decades. That’s how far back you had to rewind to find USD/JPY trading where it sat two weeks ago, and then two governments decided that was a record nobody needed to keep. The Vantage USDJPY CFD traded near 156.667 as of the 03:57 UTC (11:57 GMT+8) candle on 3 August 2026, down 0.07% on that candle alone, a rounding error next to the week it capped off. For anyone catching up on USDJPY news today, the headline isn’t the candle. It’s what happened underneath it.

This USDJPY forecast reads the chart and the macro backdrop as they stand. It does not call a trade.

What the USDJPY Chart Is Showing Today

On the Vantage USDJPY CFD 15-minute chart, the latest candle opened at 156.776, hit a high of 156.803 and a low of 156.635, and last printed 156.667 at the 03:57 UTC cut-off.

Zoom out and that single candle barely matters. USDJPY spent the back half of last week grinding lower from a peak near 160.87, a slow bleed rather than a stable range. The grind turned into a rush in the early hours of 3 August: a burst of red candles took the pair down to a low near 155.24, before it steadied into a calmer 156.10 to 156.85 band. Less a floor giving way, more a slow leak turning into a flood.

The pair sits below both moving averages on this USDJPY chart: the 50-period line at 159.701 and the 200-period at 157.084. Short-term and medium-term trend agree, and neither currently favours the dollar.

RSI(14) reads 48.94 against a 43.16 signal average, per the TradingView setup used for this analysis. Momentum dipped into oversold territory during the worst of the slide and has since climbed back toward the midpoint, usually a sign the panic has passed, for now.

Why USDJPY News Today Is About Intervention, Not Data

Japan’s finance ministry confirmed on 3 August that Tokyo and Washington had carried out coordinated yen-purchase operations, their first joint move since 2011, and said it would act again if needed.1 The trigger: a slide in the yen to roughly its weakest level in 40 years.

Bloomberg reported the US Treasury may be funding its side with euros rather than dollars, a structure strategists say props up the yen without signalling a weaker-dollar policy.2 CNBC, citing the Financial Times, said the trades ran through Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.3 Al Jazeera reported President Trump called the US role a gesture of support.4

Behind it sits a stubborn policy gap: the Bank of Japan’s rate has held at 1.00% since June 2026, against a Federal Reserve range of 3.50% to 3.75%. Markets are pricing that gap as the reason the yen kept sliding before two governments stepped in. The yen’s old habit as a safe-haven asset hasn’t gone anywhere; it just had help this week.

Levels to Watch on USD/JPY and What’s on the Calendar

The table below covers reference points on the Vantage USDJPY CFD 15-minute chart. These are reference levels, not trade signals.

The next scheduled catalyst is the US Employment Situation report for July, due from the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, 7 August 2026, 8:30 a.m. Eastern.5 Add any further word from Japan on more intervention, and this week has plenty of ways to move USD JPY.

The yen has strengthened roughly 3.44% over the past month, even as it remains down about 6.62% over the past year.6 This week’s calm follows months of the opposite.

Risk Considerations for USDJPY Traders Today

USDJPY has swung through a wider-than-usual range these past few sessions, and intervention risk means another sharp move can arrive with little warning. A Stop Loss set with that in mind, rather than one borrowed from calmer weeks, is a practical way to manage exposure to this kind of headline-driven price action.

Leverage on USDJPY CFDs is available well into triple figures, the exact cap depends on account type and regulator, and it cuts both ways, amplifying gains as easily as losses. Position sizing relative to account equity is worth a second look given the volatility, especially with Friday’s jobs data and any fresh word from Tokyo or Washington.

That’s the shape of today’s USDJPY forecast, until the next headline says otherwise. For more USDJPY news and currency trading news, see Vantage’s market analysis hub.

RISK WARNING: CFDs are complex financial instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should ensure you fully understand the risks involved and carefully consider whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money before trading.
