Vantage is a global, multi-asset broker with a team of in-house writers and market analysts who produce educational and insightful trading content for traders of all levels.

GBPUSD is holding at 1.34901 as of 13 August 2026, 14:50 (chart time), on Vantage’s GBPUSD price feed, which hides quite a ride. The pair spiked to 1.3546 within hours of Wednesday’s US inflation print landing exactly on forecast, then gave nearly all of it back. For anyone tracking the GBP/USD or GBP to USD exchange rate this week, that round trip is the story: a clean CPI relief rally that ran out of legs, with GBP vs USD now consolidating ahead of Thursday’s UK GDP and US producer price data.

What the Chart is Showing

GBPUSD_2026-08-13_12-45-11
Figure 1: GBPUSD 15-minute chart with the 50- and 200-period moving averages and RSI (14) (TradingView, Vantage price feed). Accessed on 13 August 2026, 14:50 (chart time). Data indicative, for informational purposes only.

On the 15-minute chart from the Vantage price feed, the latest candle opened at 1.34891, ticked up to 1.34901, dipped to 1.34890 and closed back at 1.34901, a gain of just 0.01 percent. Tame, compared with what came before. GBP/USD spent 11 and 12 August grinding higher out of the 1.3490 to 1.3510 band, broke through 1.3500, and ran to the 1.3544 to 1.3546 zone around midday on 12 August. That was the high-water mark. Sellers showed up almost immediately, and the pair was back under 1.3500 by the European evening, settling into 1.3485 to 1.3500 through the early hours of 13 August.

The chart’s own moving averages tell the same story. Price sits below both its 200-period average, at 1.34930, and its 50-period average, at 1.35043, meaning the bounce attempts since Tuesday’s peak have not cleared either line. The relative strength index (14), per the TradingView setup used for this analysis, reads 44.05 against a 39.33 signal line, both beneath the 50 midpoint after unwinding from a much hotter reading during Tuesday’s spike. Momentum has cooled. It has not reversed outright.

The Fundamental Backdrop

Wednesday’s US CPI for July matched expectations, and the pair moved anyway. Headline inflation rose 0.1 percent month on month, core cooled to 2.5 percent year on year from 2.6 percent in June.5 The in-line read reinforced bets that the Fed holds rates at its 16 September meeting, extending a dovish shift since the surprise July payrolls contraction reported on 7 August. 3,4 The Fed already held at 3.50 to 3.75 percent on 29 July, with three members dissenting in favour of a hike.

The UK side is tighter. The Bank of England held Bank Rate at 3.75 percent on 30 July in a 6-3 vote, with Megan Greene, Huw Pill and Catherine Mann pushing for an immediate rise to 4.00 percent. 1,2 Governor Andrew Bailey cited UK inflation easing to a 15-month low of 2.6 percent in June, but flagged energy costs tied to the conflict in the Middle East as an upside risk. 2 The next BoE decision is not until 17 September, so GBP/USD is taking its cues from US data instead.

A quieter but relevant thread: shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has continued this week, chipping away at the geopolitical premium that has periodically lifted the dollar in 2026. 7

Levels to Watch

LevelPriceWhat it means
Resistance1.3544 – 1.3546Tuesday’s post-CPI spike high
Resistance1.3504350-period moving average, capping recoveries since Tuesday
Support1.34930200-period moving average, sitting just above current price
Support1.34850 – 1.34890Session lows since Tuesday’s reversal

Table 1: Key GBPUSD levels as of 13 August 2026, 14:50 (chart time), per the TradingView setup used for this analysis. Indicative only.

The 1.3500 handle has done most of the work as a pivot over the past day and stays the level to beat into Thursday’s releases. 6,8 Clearing back above the 50-period average would suggest Tuesday’s rally still has something left; losing the overnight lows would suggest the opposite.

GBPUSD has covered around 60 pips from Tuesday’s high to Wednesday’s low in barely a session, and that kind of range does not care about anyone’s weekend plans. A Stop Loss will not stop a loss from happening. It limits how big that loss gets, worth checking before UK GDP and US PPI land Thursday.

Leverage on Vantage CFD accounts runs up to 1:1000, and it cuts both ways just as sharply as this week’s chart has. Leverage amplifies gains and losses in equal measure, so it is worth treating as a tool to manage rather than a shortcut, and position sizing is worth a second look given how fast this week has moved.
