The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) tracks just 30 large US companies and uses a price-weighted calculation method, meaning higher-priced stocks have greater influence. The S&P 500 tracks 500 companies and weights them by market capitalisation, making it a much broader measure of the US equity market. The S&P 500 is widely used as a benchmark for the broader US stock market.
