Market capitalisation weighting means that larger companies have a bigger influence on an index’s price. A company’s weight is determined by its total market value — share price multiplied by total shares outstanding — relative to all other companies in the index. This is why a large move in a company like Apple or Microsoft can noticeably shift the S&P 500 or Nasdaq 100.
