A trading account, from its basic definition, is an online investment account that allows investors to buy and sell financial products such as shares, commodities, foreign exchange, and other trading assets.
If you’re looking to kickstart your trading journey, opening a trading account is the first step to take. In this article, we’ll discuss how to choose a trading account and the best practices to consider when embarking on your trading journey.
This is also where educating yourself, establishing your trading goals, knowing the risks and managing those risks all play a part in your trading success. Explore our guide to master the essentials of managing a trading account for successful trading.
Choosing The Right Trading Account
It is important to choose a trading account that is right for you and your needs. If you are new to trading, it is important to familiarise yourself with how the various ways to trading work, and what suits your trading style, goals and financial situation. You also need to take into account how much you are willing to invest and how long you will be able to dedicate to looking after your investment.
The style of trading, the scale of your financial resources, where you are located, and even the time of day you are able to trade can all play a part in which trading account will be best suited to you.
There is no trade that has a 100% guarantee of success and that is why you need to be fully aware of the risks involved in the type of trading account you choose.
For the majority of investors, a cash account is considered the most appropriate, especially for those new to trading. It allows you to buy investments with the funds you deposit into the account.
A margin account is for investors who want to borrow money from the broker to trade large volumes. Margin trading is a riskier type of investing that is best suited for advanced traders who have the experience to trade with leverage, and to know when to make the necessary changes to the way they trade based on market movements and how their portfolio will be impacted.
As a beginner, you will lack that experience to fall back on, and you could make rash and emotional decisions that could adversely impact your financial investments.
It pays to educate yourself when you are a novice. It is beneficial to look for quality educational resources such as Vantage’s Academy. There are also avenues for a beginner to gain easy access to support and gain the ability to place practice trades before they start using their own money. This is where a Demo account gives you valuable insights into trading without the financial risks.
A more experienced investor may look for a higher level of education, including opinion-based resources authored by professional investors and trading analysts.
To get started, a Vantage trading account gives you access to 1,000+ financial products like forex, indices, stocks, ETFs, bonds, and more CFDs. It allows you to take the knowledge learned through utilising all the features of the Demo Account and applying your strategies in the real world of trading.
There is a steep learning curve when it comes to successful trading and it is wise to take a step-by-step approach to your trading journey.
Establishing your trading goals and your life goals
Establishing your trading goals and what you want from your trading experience can provide greater clarity to your trading strategies and decisions. It can be exhilarating and exciting to manage a trading account, but you need to stick to a plan to ensure you stay on track.
It’s important that you are honest with yourself about where you stand as far as investing goes and your actual goals. Asking yourself a few fundamental questions can help you make a wiser choice in the long run.
- Are you investing as a means to establish a retirement fund?
- Are you looking for a passive investment as extra income?
- Are you ready to manage your own portfolio?
- Are you willing to pay a professional to invest on your behalf?
If you do not have much time to dedicate to all that is involved in managing your choice of trading account, then it is better to choose a less time-consuming option or enlist the services of a trusted professional to look after it for you.
An example of this type of account is the Percentage Allocation Money Management (or PAMM account) where a professional account manager executes trades on behalf of the client. In this case, the account manager acts as the Fund Manager, while the clients are the Investors. A PAMM account allows investors to pool their funds together, giving them access to professional fund managers and their trading strategies.
A key to any investment is to be completely realistic and this includes your own trading goals. Fundamentally, your goals need to be realistic, affordable and achievable. If your goals are not realistic, you are less likely to stay motivated and more likely to make rash decisions or over-trade. Your goals can be yearly, monthly, weekly or daily as well as a combination of some or all of these. Seeing your progress is key to maintaining your drive, attention and your chances of success.
Understanding Trading Risk Management
If there is any prerequisite to successful trading then it is understanding the importance of risk management. With risk management techniques in place, a trader can mitigate the risk of losing all their money. Even the most substantial profits can be lost with just one or two bad trades which is why a well-devised risk management strategy is a foundation for successful trading.
Planning and managing your trading account risk is vital. Without a plan, traders are essentially riding their luck.
Unsuccessful traders are likely to enter a trade without an idea of any point at which they will sell at either a profit or a loss.
Successful traders, on the other hand, plan ahead with a price at which they are willing to pay and a price at which they will sell. This is an effective way to measure the resulting returns against the probability of the stock hitting those set goals. They are able to execute a trade when the adjusted return is high enough.
Planning and sticking to your strategy are two core ingredients in trading account management. These are both the foundation and fundamentals of any ongoing success.
Another investment strategy that lowers the risk of your portfolio and helps you get more stable returns is diversification.
The Importance of Portfolio Diversification
Spreading the risk by investing across different positions, instruments, and asset classes is a well-known trading strategy.
A balanced portfolio is particularly important during economic downturns or high volatility periods. Here is your primer to understanding portfolio diversification and how it can work in your favour.
Portfolio diversification is essentially a form of trade risk management where the investor chooses to invest in a range of asset classes, across different sectors and with varying geographic exposure. The overarching goal of diversification is to spread market risk across different assets and avoid the impact on your portfolio due to a negative event on a single holding.
A diversified portfolio is a collection of various investments that combine to reduce an investor’s overall risk of a permanent loss of capital and the overall volatility of the portfolio. This is usually done by investing in different asset classes such as stocks, bonds, foreign exchange or cryptocurrency.
A balanced portfolio will have a similarly balanced risk profile with aims to outpace inflation and provide steady returns over the long term.
Using Limit and Stop Orders
Another important part of trading success is to have an optimal entry when placing a trade.
There are three key types of orders to consider when entering a trade position.
1: Market Orders – the most common form of order type and is sometimes referred to as an instant execution because the Buy or Sell position placed by the trader is instantly executed at the current market price on a real-time basis. It is worth noting that a market order placed after trading hours will be filled at the market price when the next trading day opens.
2: Limit Orders – these are usually chosen by traders who want to limit significant losses because it is a direction to only buy or sell at a specified price or better. It does not guarantee that an order will be filled though, meaning that opportunities to make gains in a volatile market can be missed.
3: Stop Orders – a trader has an execution guarantee, where the order placed will execute whether you are monitoring the market prices or not. These types of orders can help you avoid or minimise your losses if the market acts against you. One key disadvantage is that you could be at the mercy of a short-term price fluctuation which activates an unnecessary sale.
With that said, each type of trade order – Market, Limit, or Stop – has its own set of advantages and drawbacks, so it’s important for traders to pick the one that suits their situation best.
For instance, if you want to buy or sell something right away, a Market Order is your go-to, but if you’re looking to buy or sell at a specific price, a Limit or Stop Order could be better. By understanding and choosing the right type of order based on your comfort level with risks and the current market situation, you can make smarter trading decisions and potentially avoid unfavourable financial outcomes.
Managing Trading Psychology
Trading has inherent risks of success and loss. It is not a pursuit suitable for everyone. One of the most important conversations of all, when you are thinking of embarking on market trading, is the one you need to have with yourself.
Understanding and mastering trading psychology is crucial to your chances of achieving consistent success in the financial markets. You will need to do all you can to elevate your decision-making skills. This means understanding and managing emotions, avoiding common pitfalls, and both recognising and embracing your individual strengths and weaknesses.
Self-awareness, self-discipline and understanding how to use and manage your emotions in positive ways are all part of developing a healthy trader mindset.
Effectively managing your time and stress levels, as well as maintaining focus, are key factors that can significantly influence your investment strategy and financial standing—without proper control, the risks to both can increase.
A high-quality trading ecosystem is not only a place for you to trade in financial assets but also a place for you to learn, explore and connect with other like-minded investors.
